What is GoTranscript.com?

GoTranscript is an online transcription service that provides 100% human-generated transcriptions.

This means that you can join the platform for one of two reasons – either you need someone to do transcriptions for you, or you want to work as a transcriber and make money from home this way.

This review will, however, be focusing on the aspect of making money from becoming a transcriber on GoTranscript and if this is really worth it.

Since the platform is offering 100% human-generated transcriptions, they need quite a lot of people to do this work.

So if you are looking for a way to make money from home, this might sound appealing.

And let me just reveal right away that GoTranscript is legit and it is a company that has been around for quite a while. It, for example, has clients like the Huffington Post and Forbes.

Also, if you look at the GoTranscript reviews on Trustpilot, you can see it has a lot of satisfied customers.

So it is clear to see it is a legit platform.

This does, however, not mean it will necessarily be the best option for you to make money.

To find out if that is the case, we need to look deeper into how good the opportunities are to earn on GoTranscript so you do it with the right expectations if you decide to apply.

Can you make money with GoTranscript?

GoTranscript has a rating system and every time you have completed a job, a GoTranscript editor will rate you based on your accuracy.

If you continuously get high ratings, you will also start getting access to higher-paying jobs.

So you need to be prepared to work your way up.

Also, another way you can eventually earn extra is by becoming an editor yourself.

If you keep performing well, you can be chosen to become one of the editors.

So overall GoTranscript has some earning potential. It will not make you rich and that is, of course, important to know. But it can over time give you a decent income if you are willing to make the effort.

Requirements to get GoTranscript jobs

So far it might sound like a great option to become a transcriber at GoTranscript. But you also need to make sure you meet the requirements as they do not just accept everyone.

As you can see from what I wrote in the previous section, you need to be able to pay attention to details. You will be rated based on your accuracy, and this will affect your possibilities to get further jobs and the rate you will get.

The accuracy will be based on how well you follow the GoTranscript guidelines for transcribing. Once you have joined and are inside, you will get a link to these guidelines which are several pages about how you need to do the transcriptions.

So you need to be able to follow these.

Also, you need to be willing to receive feedback. When you receive your rating, you will also get feedback from a real human being.

This is to help you improve. Personally, I think this is a great feature and it can be a great help. But you just need to know that is how it works.

GoTranscript says in its FAQ section that you do not need any special experience to be able to become a transcriber – you just need to have good English skills.

I would not necessarily agree that this is all you need.

They have some pretty strict guidelines you need to follow to even be able to pass the admission test (more about this below).

And to be able to get high ratings, more jobs, and higher pay, you also need some skills. Learning this as you go can take A LOT of time and can affect your overall rating and make it difficult to qualify for more and higher-paying jobs.

Therefore, before you join, it can be worth considering taking a transcription course like, for example, Transcribe Anywhere’s course that will give you the skills to work professionally very quickly.

It also has a free course that will help you find out if transcribing is even the right job for you.

So in my opinion, it can be worth first getting some training if you have no previous experience as a transcriber before joining GoTranscript.

They, for example, mention that they do not have any requirements in relation to how fast you type.

You will get up to 6 hours to transcribe 10 minutes of audio so it is enough even for slow transcribers. But let’s say you spend 6 hours on that – even if you get the highest rate of $0.60 per minute that means you will earn $6. That is $1 per hour.

So it might not be a requirement for you to know how to transcribe, but as you can see, the pay will be VERY low if you do not have the skills to do it faster.

How do you apply?

You cannot just join and start getting work right away. You first need to pass the GoTranscript test.

The way it works is that you sign up (for free), and you then have to answer a few initial questions in a quiz.

There are around 14 of these initial questions.

To be able to answer them correctly, you need to know the GoTranscripts guidelines (you will get a link to them at the top of the questions).

The questions need to be 100% accurate for you to be able to move on. If you manage this, you will then get access to the GoTranscript test.

This is a test job where you have to do a test transcription and you will be rated on this to see if you will be allowed to work on the platform.

They do this as they need to make sure their clients only get workers that know how to transcribe properly.

Be aware that the test job contains audio with a non-native English speaker and a video of low quality.

This is done on purpose as many orders are like that and GoTranscript wants to make sure you can transcribe such files.

If you pass, you will receive an email with instructions about how you can start working on transcriptions.

If you do not pass, you can try again a few days later. But make sure to then spend the time learning more about how to transcribe as you will not pass if you do not improve.

So overall there are no guarantees you will be accepted and you need to make sure to make an effort to get access to the GoTranscript jobs.

But if it is the right option for you depends on your experience and your goals.

If you have limited experience as a transcriber, I would clearly suggest to first take a transcribing course to learn the skills to do this professionally and to find out if it is even the right job for you.

But once you have some skills and know it is what you want to do, GoTranscript can definitely be a legit platform to get access to quite a lot of jobs.
